Tottenham Hotspur to play Newcastle United at MCG – report

Three days after the Premier League season ends, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are reportedly set to play a friendly at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The match will take place at the 100,000-seat stadium on Wednesday, May 22, following Spurs and Newcastle’s respective season finales against Sheffield United and Brentford, per the Times.

Ange Postecoglou, manager of Tottenham, will have a bit of a homecoming during the match. He won titles with South Melbourne in the 1990s as both a manager and player, and he coached Melbourne Victory in the A-League Men in 2012–13.

According to the source, Spurs had planned to play Chelsea in the friendly, but after beating Leicester City 4-2 on Sunday, the Blues are still in the FA Cup and might not be able to travel to Australia if they advance to the final on Saturday, May 25 at Wembley.

Both Spurs and Newcastle are still vying to qualify for Europe the next season. Postecoglou’s team is hoping to qualify for the Champions League, while Eddie Howe’s team is aiming for a Europa League slot.

Another European soccer weekend has produced a lot of drama, goals, and talking points.

This weekend, the FA Cup blasted off like a rocket. Jurgen Klopp’s aspirations of winning a quadruple in his final season with the Reds were dashed on Sunday when Manchester United defeated Liverpool 4-3 in extra time. Erik ten Hag also gained more experience as Man United’s manager. In other news, Haji Wright, a midfielder for Coventry City and the United States men’s national team, made headlines when his team defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers in the last seconds to get to the semifinals.

Prior to that, Fulham surprised Tottenham Hotspur by winning 3-0; this could put an end to Spurs’ chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League. In the Women’s Super League, league leaders Chelsea easily defeated Arsenal to maintain their position atop the standings, but the next day, Manchester City did the same against Brighton, resulting in a draw.

Vinícius Júnior, who scored twice in Real Madrid’s La Liga triumph over Osasuna, once again demonstrated why he is among the world’s most in-form wingers. And since coach Xavi Hernandez declared he will retire at the conclusion of the season, Barcelona has been on quite the roll.

Harry Kane accomplished both individual and team goals in the Bundesliga as they crushed Darmstadt 5-2. Time to relive the weekend!
