Dallas Cowboys Cut $57.5 Million Wide Receiver in Proposed Salary-Cap Saving Move
Ever since the Green Bay Packers surprisingly eliminated the Dallas Cowboys, the team had to assess how it could enhance for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, giving up on Michael Gallup and his $57.5 million deal is among the first things that might be done.
The Cowboys performed admirably during the regular season, winning the NFC East division with a 12-5 record. Dallas received the best seed as a result just before the playoffs began.
Despite having one of the NFL’s best offenses and defenses, the Cowboys fell in spectacular fashion to a Jordan Packers team captained by Love. Dallas became the first team to lose to a seventh-seeded team since the bracket was expanded during the 2021 playoffs, despite facing the youngest team in the league.
The front staff will now need to evaluate how to surround Dak Prescott with a stronger roster throughout the offseason. In addition to pursuing important players in the draft or free agency, it appears that Dallas will consider the possibility of letting Gallup leave.
Gallup isn’t the same player he once was, as the previous season shown. According to Aaron Schatz’s piece for ESPN, the Cowboys will lose out on keeping the wide receiver:
“Last season, he was the clear third among the Cowboys’ main receivers. He ranked 59th in receiving DYAR out of 81 qualifying receivers. By comparison, CeeDee Lamb was third and Brandin Cooks was 28th after coming on robust during the season’s second half.
The Cowboys would have a ton of dead money on their cap if Gallup received a standard cut. However, the Cowboys would have $9.5 million in more cap space plus $4.4 million in dead money if they made the cut after June 1. The Cowboys, who are presently $20 million above the cap for 2024, would benefit from the additional cap room, Schatz writes.
Dallas will need that extra breathing room to retain key players on the current roster or to make a move for critical free agents. Regardless, it appears that Gallup’s tenure with the Cowboys is coming to an end.
