Tottenham transfer: questions as Conor Gallagher and James Garner are interest to Tottenham.

Paul Robinson doubts that James Garner is a better option for Tottenham to pursue than Conor Gallagher.

Spurs had been willing to pay £35 million for the Chelsea academy product last summer [Guardian, 30 January]. However, the Everton player has now surfaced as a potential substitute [TEAMtalk, 18 February].

Although Robinson has always expressed skepticism about the possibility of a deal between Stamford Bridge and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he would choose Gallagher over the other young midfield player.

Ange Postecoglou feels that Mauricio Pochettino’s favorite, who is 24 years old, is the more likely summer addition who can immediately enter the starting lineup.

“I think where Tottenham are at the moment they need to sign players not to bolster the squad but to make the starting XI better,” the former England and Spurs keeper exclusively told Tottenham News.

“I would wonder if Garner actually does it. I would wonder if he and Conor Gallagher are on the same level.

Conor Gallagher still needs to grow a lot, in my opinion, but his work ethic and attitude are excellent. There is certainly potential in the finished product, but it still needs development.

But Garner is the same.

Even though both English midfielders are starting to play a bigger role for their teams, circumstances outside their managers’ control could yet cause them to leave.

The Chelsea administration is looking for the pure profit that would come from selling a homegrown player, even if neither Gallagher nor Pochettino appear to be interested in a trade.

Similar to this, Sean Dyche will not want any of his regulars to go because that would limit his options, but he is aware that his team may need to make some exits due to financial difficulties.

The Toffees player would probably be the less expensive of the two, but if substantial funds were to be spent on either, Postecoglou would have to be confident in strengthening his potent midfield rotation.
