Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers accused of ‘casual sexism’ after saying ‘good girl’ to BBC reporter after terse radio interview

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers came under fire from women’s groups after saying ‘good girl’ to a BBC Scotland reporter at the end of a terse post-match interview.

Campaigners at the For Women Scotland organisation accused the Celtic boss of ‘casual sexism’.

And they demanded an apology from him to Jane Lewis when their conversation was played on the Sportsound radio show after Sunday’s thrilling 3-1 victory against Motherwell at Fir Park.

For his part, Rodgers had told Lewis that ‘the tale has already been written about this bunch, but we will write our own story’ regarding the title race, and Lewis had asked him to elaborate.

He was dissatisfied with the line of inquiry when she pushed him to expand, saying, “No, no, you know exactly what I mean.”

Lewis persisted in asking Rodgers to elaborate, but it seemed like he was wrapping off the interview when he stated, “Done, good girl, well done.”

Lewis, a broadcast professional with decades of experience, has not commented on the matter and is thought to be unfazed.

However, a spokeswoman from the Scottish Feminist Network said: ‘Jane Lewis was just doing her job, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment.

The fact that in 2024, contempt was the default attitude is both illuminating and incredibly distressing. We believed dinosaurs to be extinct.

For Women Scotland activists demanded an apology from Rodgers.

“It’s depressing that casual sexism is still embedded in sport,” a representative stated. Women’s accomplishments are minimized and disregarded, and their standing in the workplace is compromised. The reporter deserves an apology from Rodgers.

On X, now known as Twitter, former Hibs midfielder Tam McManus called Rodgers’ remarks “utterly embarrassing.”

When Mail Sport called Celtic on Sunday night, they declined to comment.
