Pundit says Postecoglou did something foolish in the 62nd minute of Tottenham’s win today.
Ange Postecoglou has been accused of making a mistake in today’s Premier League clash between Tottenham and Brighton.
The charge was leveled by Paul Merson during a Saturday speech on Sky Sports Soccer.
What has been mentioned regarding Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou? Let’s examine this.
What Merson said about Postecoglou
Well, the 55-year-old believes the Australian’s substitutions in the 62nd minute disturbed Tottenham’s rhythm.
Postecoglou introduced Yves Bissouma, Brennan Johnson and Heung-min Son just after Pape Matar Sarr scored in the 61st minute to make it 1-1.
Some may have presumed that Spurs would then take control and push for all three points, although it was Brighton who performed better after the triple substitution.
Speaking about Postecoglou’s bold decision, Merson said: “It’s been all Brighton since those subs. He (Postecoglou) was going for it but it looks like a bit of a mistake.”
Postecoglou knows what he is doing at Tottenham
In the 95th minute, two of his replacements combined to give Tottenham a 2-1 lead, giving the 58-year-old the final laugh.
With only seconds remaining, Son’s exquisite cross set up Johnson for a spectacular goal into the top of the net, ensuring Spurs’ victory after last week’s 2-2 draw with Everton.
Making three changes right once after Sarr’s equalizer was undoubtedly brave of Postecoglou, and as Merson noted, it did seem to throw Tottenham’s rhythm off a little.
If Brighton had emerged victorious in north London earlier in the day, we think more commentators would have criticized the Tottenham manager for his three substitutions.
Nevertheless, the Nea Filadelfeia man’s bold decision paid off, and he deserves a lot of praise for his gutsy swap that ultimately resulted in all three points.
