All Black great Sonny Bill Williams called former England and Australia coach Eddie Jones “a disgrace” on Thursday, claiming that the mentor had “obviously lied” to the Australian players and supporters.
Six weeks after Jones quit the Wallabies after their awful World Cup performance, Japan announced his appointment as head coach on Wednesday.

The 63-year-old has consistently denied being pursuing the position, and Williams—a former World Cup champion who is currently a pundit—said the circumstances were pretty depressing for fans of the game.
“It’s quite sad, isn’t it?
“My thoughts on this whole saga is that he lied,” Williams, who also played Rugby League and had a successful boxing career, told Australian broadcaster Channel Nine.
“Obviously he lied to the players, he lied to the public, he lied to the Australian Rugby Union.
“What a disgrace.”
A PROVEN TRACK RECORD
Jones won two of the nine Test matches he helmed the Wallabies for, including their worst-ever World Cup in which they were eliminated in the group stages.
After England sacked him in January, he assumed leadership of his home nation who appeared to be treading water under the previous regime. However, Williams noted the consistent decline in performance from the coach.
Williams said it was a shame that Japan bought into the Jones mystique.
“Second point would be, I feel sorry for Japan. His track record speaks for itself,” added Williams.
The process of appointment has been questioned by not only Williams but also the Japanese press. Rugby authorities have been accused of obscuring the events surrounding Jones getting the post.
