‘Could Be Hit With Transfer Ban’: Tottenham Hotspur Face Allegations of crucial charge that could lead to their title race demise
Tottenham Hotspur is accused of breaking transfer regulations by signing a 140-goal striker.
Tottenham Hotspur have seen their dream start to the 2023/24 season derailed in the last few weeks with their back-to-back losses to Chelsea and Wolves in the Premier League. Now to make things worse, the club is facing some serious allegations of breaking the English Football Association’s rules in the past, surrounding ex-player and club hero Jermain Defoe.
What Are Spurs Being Accused Of?
Tottenham Hotspur is being accused of violating transfer regulations in relation to Jermain Defoe.
According to Matt Lawton of The Times, the Football Association is preparing to examine a possible case of a major violation of football agency regulations over the 2008 transfer of Jermain Defoe from Portsmouth to Spurs for an estimated £7.5 million. The Lilywhites are accused of having played a major part in pushing the transfer through with the assistance of their former player Mitchell Thomas, an unregistered agent.
Despite Thomas’s inclusion on a list of unlicensed agents in 2008, Tottenham was able to go on without any problems.
then. While the FA took no disciplinary action against the North London heavyweights at that time, they are willing to re-open the case now and could potentially decide to take action against them 15 years later. Spurs are yet to comment on these allegations against them.
Could Spurs Face Any Punishment For Breaching Rules?
Lawton states that Luton Town was fined 10 points for a similar offense in the same year and that breaking the FA’s agency rules can lead to serious consequences. It is also stated that, depending on how serious the infraction is, “clubs can be hit with a transfer ban,” lose points, or even get demoted.
Even while the FA may be getting ready to pick up where they left off in this case, it is still unclear whether Spurs will face severe sanctions for it all these years later. Jermain Defoe, has 140 goals in total
in 361 career appearances for the Lilywhites, is now retired from the beautiful game. But with Everton recently being struck with a 10-point deduction for breaching transfer rules, it remains to be seen if Tottenham are punished for something they did so many years ago.
