‘At fault’ – BBC journalist slams West Ham star who ‘swtiched off’ in loss v Aston Villa West Ham
West Ham star Lucas Paqueta was “at fault” for Aston Villa’s first two goals in the match between the two clubs on Sunday (22 October), according to BBC journalist Ben Collins.
The 4-1 victory by Unai Emery’s team over the Hammers at Villa Park was their third defeat of the season.Ollie Watkins, Moussa Diaby, and Douglas Luiz all scored goals for the home team, while Jarrod Bowen tallied a goal for the visitors.
West Ham contributed to the lively encounter at Villa Park, but the first two goals were the fault of Lucas Paqueta, who nearly joined Manchester City in the summer, according to Collins’ article for BBC Sport.
Paqueta “switched off as he gave compatriot Douglas Luiz a free run toward goal to score the opening goal,” he continued.
Just after the break, Paqueta’s errant ball allowed Konsa to evade Edson Alvarez and bring down the Villa defender for the penalty.
Disappointing
With the Brazil ace struggling against Villa on Sunday, Paqueta has shown that he is simply human. He has been outstanding for the Hammers thus far this season, contributing significantly to his team’s successful start to the Premier League season at both ends of the field.
Even if every player occasionally has a bad game, this one’s defeat for the East London club wasn’t all Paqueta’s responsibility.
Given their domination throughout the full 90 minutes, the home team would have more than likely won even without his errors.
Under Emery, Villa have transformed Villa Park into a true fortress, and the Midlands club is now exceedingly difficult to defeat at home.
With the loss, the Hammers have received a wake-up call, and David Moyes must now motivate his team to quickly turn things around.
