Are Tottenham now title contenders? See what Garry Neville said about that.
Gary Neville has been arguing that Tottenham Hotspur has to add stronger players to their bench if they want to compete at the very top of the Premier League when talking about the North London club’s chances of winning the title this season.
Ange Postecoglou’s tenure at Tottenham has gotten off to a fantastic start thus far. Spurs have remained unbeaten in the Premier League with five victories and two draws, and the Lilywhites are presently ranked second.
Spurs defeated a team they hadn’t defeated since 2017 in their most recent victory, a dramatic last-second win against Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday night.
There have been advancements, with players like James Maddison and Micky van de Ven providing the Spurs team with much-needed talent.
However, it is a devastating indictment of Tottenham’s current depth that Postecoglou could only call on players like Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and youngster Alejo Veliz from the bench over the weekend.
Can Spurs challenge for the Premier League title?
Gary Neville, a pundit for Sky Sports (30/09/23 – 19:30 onwards through Football.London), expressed his admiration for what Spurs are now constructing but claimed that they will not be contending for the title this year.
I don’t think they’re title contenders, he added. You can tell they aren’t title contenders when the bench enters the game; I believe they will be far from it.
“However, what I saw at the North London Derby last week showed them to be spirited and more resilient than I had anticipated.
They are in a good situation. There is a spirit in the stadium and on the field, and there is a bond between the manager’s personality, the players on the field, and the spectators. In contrast to recent years, we aren’t discussing nearly as much about the Spurs boardroom.
“There’s no denying that Spurs are benefiting from this. Although there are hurdles along the way and things aren’t always as good as they seem, I believe they’ll have a stronger season than I anticipated.
Obviously, I concur with Neville. Currently, we are performing pretty well, but a few injuries would put us in serious danger. Similarly, as we saw on Saturday, there aren’t many players on the bench who can alter the course of a game right now.
