Gary Neville makes interesting claim when asked if Tottenham are potential title challengers this season
Despite Tottenham’s outstanding league start, Gary Neville has disputed claims that they will fight for the league crown this year.
They and their bitter rivals Arsenal are the only two unbeaten teams in the Premier League.
Last night, they defeated a 9-man Liverpool team in dramatic manner, with Joel Matip’s own goal giving them the victory in the 96th minute.
With 17 points from 7 games with the victory, they move up to second place in the standings, one point behind City and ahead of Arsenal on goal differential.
Neville was questioned about their chances of winning the championship after the game.
The Sky Sports analyst, however, argued that their lack of squad depth will hinder them.
He said:
They aren’t title contenders in my opinion.
“You can tell they aren’t title contenders when the bench enters the game; I believe they will be far from it.
But what I saw at the North London Derby last week has shown me that they are energetic and more resilient than I had anticipated.
They are in a good situation. There is a spirit in the stadium and on the field, and there is a bond between the manager’s personality, the players on the field, and the spectators.
As opposed to the previous few years, “we’re not talking too much about the boardroom at Spurs.”
But what I saw at the North London Derby last week has shown me that they are energetic and more resilient than I had anticipated.
“There’s no denying that Spurs are benefiting from this. Although there are hurdles along the way and things aren’t always as good as they seem, I believe they’ll have a stronger season than I anticipated.
Neville has a point. We currently lack the roster depth to compete with teams like Manchester City.
We only need a few more injuries before our defense and midfield start to falter.
Conversations might begin if we are in the top three by January and have a successful January transfer window, adding numerous players to strengthen our defense and midfield.
However, such statements are premature at this time. Let’s enjoy the journey with Ange Postecoglou and take it game by game.
