Postecoglou’s message to Spurs fans after unprecedented undefeated streak continues
Ange Postecoglou, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, continued his extraordinary unbeaten streak at home on Sunday morning (AEST), as Spurs overcame a goal deficit in the last seconds of regulation to defeat Sheffield United.
In the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time, Spurs were on the verge of losing when Brazilian striker Richarlison and Swedish attacker Dejan Kulusevski combined for two goals in two minutes at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The victory maintained Spurs’ perfect start to the Premier League campaign under Postecoglou as they prepare for titanic games against their bitter rivals Arsenal and Liverpool in the upcoming two weeks.
It also brought Postecoglou’s extraordinary home unbeaten streak, which spans his time at Yokohama F. Marinos, Celtic, and Spurs, to 50 straight games. And he’s triumphed in 42 of them.
In response to a question regarding his impressive home record, the Premier League Manager of the Month for August said that his desire to “reward” the fans has been a motivating force behind the unbeaten streak.
Postecoglou responded, “It’s funny you say that because I do put a big emphasis on that, wherever I’ve been, because ultimately for your supporters, as much as you enjoy the away wins because you’ve got to earn every one of them, it’s when they come to their home ground that you really want to reward them,” he said.
“From that standpoint, if you can create that atmosphere, I’ve been fortunate that at the last three clubs I’ve had we’ve even had 30,000 to 40,000, and at Celtic they’re always sold out, and it creates an atmosphere and you can see today it helps the team,” said the player.
“I think that helps you as a club if you’re really strong at home so yeah it’s something I’m proud of.”
The win over Sheffield was met with raucous celebrations in the stadium from the reenergized Spurs fan base, who have become fond of Postecoglou in recent weeks and for good reason given that Spurs are currently second in the Premier League standings.
When asked if Spurs supporters should lower their expectations following their explosive start to the season, Postecoglou responded that they should continue to enjoy their strong play.
He shouted on the media channel of Tottenham, “No, no, no, let them go, let them go, and enjoy it.
My job is not to deflate people’s balloons. Let them get overly enthusiastic and impatient.
The pleasure of being a supporter is that. You want to let them appreciate it because they already go through enough pain. It’s up to us to live up to their expectations if they believe we will be world beaters, which is fantastic.
“Our supporters deserve to be happy and to enjoy it however they choose.”
